As Hurricane Harvey meandered through our home town, it left a massive trail of destruction and flooding. The Stories of America headquarters was spared from the flooding, but from our office we watched Stories of America unfold as everyday citizens brought boats to rescue people from houses across the creek. We saw the heroes we write about and interview… the Army National Guard, Coast Guard, and even the Marines were brought in to aid in the rescue efforts. The local police and volunteer fire departments worked around the clock with very little sleep.
Local hospital staff worked around the clock for days, waiting for relief staff to be able to reach the hospital as the flood waters went down. There are countless stores of these every day heroes in action, from Corpus Christie, Texas, to Lake Charles, Louisiana.
After the water went down enough in our area to be able to get around, we began to watch another flood come into town. A flood of people from all around. I spent one afternoon cleaning out a flooded house with a group from Austin. In the first five days after we were able to get out, I spent time with people from varied backgrounds, working together for the good of those around us. An anesthesiologist, a chemist, a NASA engineer, an accountant, teachers, moms, high school kids, pastors, and many more. It has been an amazing experience to work with people from all over. The only thing we had in common is that we are human beings, and we are Americans.
Do you have a story from Harvey? Do you have a story about someone who has worked to make their community a better place? We want to hear your stories.
Send your stories to mystory@StoriesOfAmerica.org. We would love to share them here.
